Step 7:  Plan -> Strategy for Obstacles & Setbacks

One of the greatest hurdles you can face while on course to success, whether in personal or professional life is frustration. It is one of the major menaces that the world faces today. It slowly takes the toll on you and brings down your happiness, eliminates the joy from your life, makes it gloomy and decreases your potential for success.

How can you move forward with your Turtle Steps when the obstacles seem overwhelming? How can you deal with the inevitable frustrations of being stalled on moving forward? Here are some ideas to add to your Plan for 2018, because you will become frustrated. Every hero’s journey is fraught with it.

Realize it is normal to proceed with a “three steps forward, two steps back” rhythm. This truth is maddening but it is the reality of any change. Don’t fight this reality. It is a waste of your precious energy and you will lose 100% of the time. Understand that this is the way forward despite how it looks or feels. And speaking of feeling…

Avoid feeding the frustration. Frustration can snowball quickly with those negative thoughts reproducing endlessly in your head.  Stop the madness. Breathe. Interrupt your mind chatter. Take a walk, do a crossword puzzle, pet your dog.  Remind yourself of your goals for 2018 and your reasons for why you want to create this in your life. Go back to your Wheel of Life and Visualization (Steps 2 & 3).  Ground yourself; which leads to the next step.

Focus on this moment. Mindfulness has gotten a great deal of press recently and for good reason. You only have this moment. Expending your energy on thinking about the past creates depression and thinking about your future only creates anxiety.  It is only in this present moment that you find peace and focus.  Find your center by focusing on the activity you have right in front of you. How can you do it better? Or how can you do this in a more fun way? Whatever comes to mind, do it.

Use your life line and call a friend. When all else fails, there is nothing better than connecting with a supportive friend who knows what you are working towards. Every person should build their own personal “board of directors” to encourage and support them when the times are tough. Being vulnerable and honest about how this or that obstacle is derailing you will allow your friend to focus on the best ways to help you move forward.

Many times, the act of just talking about my frustrations with a supportive friend is all I need to get back on track. Within the conversation, I remember how human I am, how hard my hero’s journey can be sometimes and I let my mentor give me the encouraging hug I need to recalibrate and focus on my next Turtle step. You were never meant to do any of this alone.
