Step 6: Plan -> Turtle Steps
You have been visualizing an amazing 2018. You have awareness of where your life needs some tweaks thanks to The Life Wheel. You now know about how personal change works via your Hero’s Journey and the Change Cycle. It is time to plan out the steps to create your best year yet.
I use a tool called Turtle Steps. I learned this tool from Martha Beck when I first took Life Coach Training. Turtle Steps are tiny, teeny-weeny, ridiculously easy steps toward a goal. To create a Turtle Step, you look at your end goal, break up the steps toward achieving it, and then cut those steps in half. Then cut them in half again. Keep cutting them in half until they are so easy that you could do them in your sleep. Then, you start with the first easy Turtle Step. Follow that with the next one. And the next. It might be just one Turtle Step per day, but you keep on trekking. Lo and behold – you accomplish your vision.
In my previous life, I did not use Turtle Steps. I assumed I had to be in Sisyphus-mode, pushing huge boulders up many hills and this was my default action mode. Needless to say, my body shut down after years of that craziness and said, “Stop it, you insane woman! There is a better way!”
So in this moment, I’d just like to say congrats to myself for actually changing this mode of action. Learning to do Turtle Steps was a major achievement for me. I really thought that pushing boulders and climbing mountains were essential to success. The truth is, I can get way more done by using Turtle Steps. Though tiny, they are do-able and oh so mighty. Before you know it, you are at the finish line.
What do you want to accomplish in 2018? Go back to your vision board and your visualization, Life Wheel, or your dreaming and scheming work. Write that goal down. Now what are the steps you need to take to reach that goal? Break those steps down. Now, break them down again, and again, until they are ridiculously easy.
Here’s one of my goals for 2018: I want to return to a regular yoga practice at a local studio to augment my “at home” sessions.
Steps (after breaking them down a few times into easy Turtle Steps):
- Find a local studio I want to try.
- Find out their class schedule and prices.
- Schedule a class I want to try on my calendar.
- Day before class, lay out my yoga clothes and put mat in car.
- On the day of class, put on my yoga clothes and drive to class.
- Go into class (or don’t and calendar it for another day).
- Pay for class.
- Enter yoga room and roll out my mat.
- Go into child’s pose.
- Thank the Universe for getting me here.
By breaking this new activity into these Turtle Steps, the goal seems doable and actually ridiculously simple. I could break it down even more, if I end up not doing a step. That is your clue that a step is too big. If you have no energy to do a step, break it down more. Remember: make the step S I M P L E.
Next week, I will help you expand your plan by considering how to deal with the inevitable obstacles (dragons) that you will encounter along the way. Those detours are there and you can have a strategy on how to deal with them successfully.
