Step 9:  Repeat Steps 1 – 8 to Continue Improving your Life

Personal development is a lifelong pursuit, whether we are conscious of it or not. The novelist, Paulo Coelho hits home with his quote. “When we strive to become better than we are,” he said, “everything around us becomes better, too.”

As we improve, not only do our lives improve, but others around us become better as well. Here, in no particular order, are my favorite tips on how to continue improving your life:

Never Stop Learning. Use your curiosity as a guide. What do you want to know more about or learn? Google or Youtube your heart out. Visit the library or bookstore. Enroll in a class. Join a Mastermind. The more we learn, the more content we feel. We also become more interesting people, with more to offer, more to share, and more to teach.

Talk More Openly. Here is a massive improvement, that all of us could make right now, and the world would be a better place. Talk more openly; to friends, to family, and to acquaintances when the moment is right. Too often we hide behind barriers when we interact. Openness is an admirable quality, and it brings out the best in other people too. Read Brené Brown’s new book, “Braving the Wilderness – The Quest for True Belonging and the Courage to Stand Alone,” to be challenged with specific steps on how to develop this essential skill. Game-changer!

Listen to Loved Ones. As well as learning to talk more openly, a great improvement that everyone around you will appreciate, is learning to listen; more intently, more sincerely, and more deeply. My mom always said, “God gave us two ears and one mouth for a reason.” When loved ones talk, especially about something important to them, listen. Be patient, ask questions and reflect understanding. Give no advice. Listen to the feeling and emotions they are conveying as well as the words. Sometimes people just need someone to talk to, so learn to listen to them and your relationships will improve ten fold.

Do A Good Deed Every Day.  It might sound cheesy, but this is a practical way of making sure you are improving; by being compassionate and giving. Do a good deed for someone who is not expecting it; family, friends, co-workers; the person in line behind you. Anyone. Just try to do one good deed (secretly is much more fun!) out of nothing other than the goodness of your heart. Do this every day and you will find a new kind of joy.

Connect with Others.  Encouraging friends can invigorate and uplift us. They help us to improve by offering us a wider range of perspectives with which to balance our beliefs. Try a new Meet-up or community activity. Reach out and learn a new skill while connecting with others.

Connect with Nature and Her Creatures.  For those of you who know me, being outdoors with animals is my happy place. The peaceful energy that surrounds me fills my heart and soul.  Find your happy place. Visit it often, even if it is just in your imagination. Gift yourself with what makes your heart sing.
